Phoenix Police Address Community Concerns Over Presence of Federal Agencies

After reports of increased federal activity downtown, Phoenix PD reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and clarified its role in relation to ICE and other federal law enforcement bodies.

The Phoenix Police Department has released a public statement following community concerns about the presence of federal agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the National Guard in parts of downtown Phoenix.

In the statement, officials emphasized the department’s commitment to serving all residents with dignity and respect, underscoring that Phoenix PD officers are focused on local and state law enforcement, not immigration enforcement.

“Phoenix PD officers do not enforce federal immigration laws,” the department stated. “While we do not participate with ICE, we also cannot interrupt or prevent their operations.”

The department noted that while it collaborates with federal partners on serious criminal investigations—such as those involving drug trafficking, child exploitation, and violent crime—those partnerships are limited to cases that enhance public safety without compromising constitutional rights.

To maintain trust and transparency, Phoenix PD outlined clear expectations for identifying legitimate city officers. Officers are required to display visible department identifiers, may not wear full-face coverings, and must identify themselves when performing official duties.

Residents who encounter individuals claiming to be Phoenix police but who fail to provide identification are urged to call 911 immediately if the situation is active or contact the Office of Accountability and Transparency at (602) 262-6287for non-emergencies.

The department reiterated that federal agents operate independently and do not represent Phoenix PD. “Together, we can ensure safety, accountability, and trust in our community,” the statement concluded.
