As summer approaches and temperatures begin their annual rise, the City of Phoenix has activated its network of heat relief resources, opening multiple cooling sites across the city starting May 1.
The initiative is part of Phoenix’s broader heat response strategy, aimed at protecting residents from extreme heat conditions that can quickly become life-threatening. Officials are urging anyone in need—especially vulnerable populations—to take advantage of the available services.
At the center of the effort is a 24/7 respite facility located at 20 W. Jackson St., offering air-conditioned space, drinking water, and access to support services. Staff on-site can also help connect visitors with shelter options and other community resources.
Additional cooling centers are operating with extended evening hours to provide relief during the hottest parts of the day. The Justa Center, located at 1001 W. Jefferson St., is open daily from 3 to 9 p.m., while the Cholla Library at 10050 Metro Pkwy E. offers both cooling space and full library services, staying open until 9 p.m. most days.
To improve accessibility, residents can call 2-1-1 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. for assistance finding transportation to the nearest cooling location.
City officials say the early rollout reflects lessons learned from previous summers, when prolonged heat waves strained emergency services and disproportionately affected those without reliable access to air conditioning.
