Phoenix Officer Indicted After Allegedly Driving 50 MPH Over Limit Before Rollover Crash

Grand jury charges patrol officer with aggravated assault and endangerment in March collision that injured three

A Phoenix police officer has been indicted on multiple felony counts after investigators determined he was traveling roughly 50 mph above the posted speed limit just before a violent rollover crash earlier this year.

Officer Joshua Allen Woodcock was identified Wednesday following an internal departmental review and a subsequent evaluation by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. A grand jury ultimately charged him with four counts, including aggravated assault and endangerment.

The collision happened in the early morning hours of March 14 near the Interstate 17 access road and Buckeye Road. Police said Woodcock was driving west on Buckeye when his patrol SUV hit a car turning left from the eastbound lanes. The impact caused the police vehicle to overturn, injuring three people — the officer and two occupants of the other vehicle — though all injuries were described as non-life-threatening. Investigators concluded impairment was not a factor.

After completing its internal investigation, the Phoenix Police Department forwarded the case to prosecutors, who presented it to the grand jury.

Additional information on Arizona’s criminal-charging process can be found through the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.
