Arizona officials announced Thursday that Phoenix Municipal Stadium will open Feb. 1 as the second state-run mass COVID-19 vaccination site.
Eligible populations can start signing up for what could be a limited number of vaccines at the site at 9 a.m. Tuesday.
“The number of appointments that are available is going to be completely dependent on the number of doses that we will have,” Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services said. “So we’re still working to see what those projections look like.”
Hours of operation will be limited to daytime, said in a joint press release from ADHS and the governor’s office, unlike the state’s 24-hour COVID-19 vaccine site at State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
“Arizona’s vaccine site at State Farm Stadium has been a game changer,” Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey said in the release.
“This week has demonstrated Arizonans are ready for the COVID-19 vaccine. We’re going to do our part to make sure they get it,” he said.
All appointments at the state’s 24/7 vaccination site at State Farm Stadium for January have been filled.
“This is positive, encouraging news as we scale up our vaccination capacity in Arizona,” Christ said in the release.
“It’s clear that Arizonans are excited about the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. We’re working around the clock to meet that demand. As the federal government ships more vaccine doses to Arizona, we will have more vaccine sites and appointments available soon.”
Arizona health officials decided Wednesday to lower the age requirement for phase 1B COVID-19 vaccination eligibility to 65 starting early next week.
The change will open up vaccine opportunities for more than 750,000 Arizonans, the state health department confirmed.
Christ said that Arizona was “doing relatively well” in distributing vaccines even before launching a high-capacity 24-hour site at State Farm Stadium in Glendale this week.

Those without computer access or needing extra help registering can call 1-844-542-8201 to be connected with someone who can assist. Note: You can use the patient portal at podvaccine.azdhs.gov to make an appointment for a relative in a prioritized group.
Those scheduled for vaccination will need to show identification upon arrival to the vaccination site demonstrating they qualify for phases 1A or priority 1B.
