A Phoenix mother is facing manslaughter and child abuse charges after a Sunday morning rollover crash on Interstate 17 killed her 9-year-old daughter and injured her three other children.
Brenda Liliana Rivera Estrada, 30, was driving northbound on I-17 near Peoria Avenue around 7:30 a.m. when the single-vehicle collision occurred, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. All four of her children were in the car at the time.
The 9-year-old girl, who was sharing a seatbelt with a sibling, was ejected during the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene. Rivera Estrada and her three surviving children — an 11-year-old boy, a 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl — were transported to a hospital and have since been released.
Rivera Estrada was arrested and booked into jail on one count of manslaughter and four counts of child abuse. Her bond was set at $100,000. Authorities say speed and impairment are suspected as contributing factors, and DPS indicated additional charges may follow as the investigation continues.
Northbound I-17 was closed for approximately seven hours Sunday while investigators worked the scene and crews cleared the wreckage.
