A predawn encounter at a Phoenix bus stop turned into an alleged armed robbery and sexual assault, with police arresting a 30-year-old man about a week after the incident.
Kenneth Calvin Smith was arrested Saturday in connection with the Aug. 1 incident near McDowell Road and 24th Street, according to court documents. Police say Smith approached a couple around 4:30 a.m. while the woman’s boyfriend was asleep and pointed a gun at her.
The woman reportedly gave Smith her last dollar and said she had no more money. After her boyfriend woke up, he allegedly offered Smith a card with homeless resources instead of cash. Police say Smith then forced the woman to a nearby parking lot, where he sexually assaulted her while threatening her with the gun. Her subsequent forensic examination documented multiple injuries.
According to court records, the boyfriend eventually ran to the parking lot and told Smith he had called police. Smith allegedly demanded his phone at gunpoint, but the man threw it into nearby bushes before Smith fled west on McDowell Road.
Smith faces two counts of armed robbery, kidnapping, two counts of sexual assault and two counts of aggravated assault. His bond was set at $500,000. Court records also show prior convictions and arrests involving DUI, threats and intimidation, domestic violence-related criminal damage and assault.
