Phoenix is marking the nation’s 250th anniversary with a new interactive walking exhibit that invites residents and visitors to explore the city’s history through a self-guided tour across the downtown Civic Space.
The Phoenix History Walk begins at the northwest corner of First Avenue and Washington Street, where visitors can follow 48 colorful sidewalk decals tracing key moments in the history of Arizona and the area that became present-day Phoenix. The route winds around historic buildings on the City Hall campus before concluding inside Phoenix City Hall.
The indoor portion of the exhibit focuses on the city’s designated Points of Pride, using QR codes to connect visitors with 360-degree virtual experiences at some of Phoenix’s best-known destinations. The digital tours include locations such as Piestewa Peak, the Orpheum Theatre, and St. Mary’s Basilica, allowing visitors to explore the sites through immersive panoramic views using their smartphones.
The installation is part of the nationwide America 250 celebration commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. Rather than focusing solely on national history, Phoenix’s exhibit emphasizes the city’s own development, cultural landmarks, and historical milestones, offering a local perspective on the broader anniversary. The History Walk will remain in place for several weeks as Phoenix continues its yearlong America 250 programming.
