PHOENIX — A man is dead after allegedly attempting to break into a home in central Phoenix early Sunday morning, according to local authorities.

Officers with the Phoenix Police Department responded to a burglary call around 7:45 a.m. near 7th and Glendale avenues. Upon arrival, they discovered that the homeowner had confronted and shot a male intruder who was reportedly trying to break into the residence.

Phoenix Fire Department crews also responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead. His identity has not yet been released pending family notification.

According to investigators, preliminary information suggests the suspect entered the property without permission, prompting the homeowner to take defensive action. It’s unclear if the suspect was armed at the time or whether there was any exchange between the homeowner and the intruder before the shooting.

Detectives remained at the scene for several hours, interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence, and reviewing any available surveillance footage from nearby homes.

No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing. The case will be reviewed by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed.
