Phoenix is heading into another stretch of dangerous summer heat, with temperatures expected to climb well above normal across the Valley through much of the week.
The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat warning from 10 a.m. Monday through 8 p.m. Friday. Forecast highs across the lower deserts are expected to reach 109 to 113 degrees most days, putting the region under widespread major heat risk.
Phoenix hit 110 degrees Sunday, compared with a normal high of about 105 for Aug. 17. The timing also matters: temperatures typically begin easing by this point in August, so the current forecast represents an especially significant departure from seasonal averages.
There could be some relief later in the week as monsoon storms become more likely Wednesday or Thursday. If enough storms develop to bring cooler temperatures, forecasters say portions of Arizona could see the heat warning lifted early.
For now, residents should plan outdoor activities for the cooler morning hours and make sure they have access to plenty of water and air conditioning. Cooling centers remain available throughout the Valley for people who need a place to escape the heat.
