Phoenix Elementary School District Considers Closing Two Schools

Declining Enrollment Forces District to Weigh School Closures, Community Meetings Scheduled

PHOENIX — The Phoenix Elementary School District is considering closing Dunbar Elementary and Heard Elementary by the end of the school year, citing declining enrollment and financial challenges.

If the closures proceed, Dunbar students would be moved to Bethune Elementary, while Heard students would relocate to Capitol Elementary. District officials say bus transportation will be provided to affected students.

Parents Raise Concerns Over Safety and Community Impact

Many parents and community members are expressing concern over the potential changes. Angelica Luna, a parent, voiced worries about her child’s safety.

“Heard is a part of the family,” Luna said. “They are trying to transfer our students to Capitol, where crime and violence are very high. The safety of our children is the main concern right now.”

The district, which is 153 years old, says declining birth rates and the rising cost of living in downtown Phoenix have contributed to lower enrollment numbers.

Superintendent Acknowledges Difficult Decisions

In an online message to parents, Superintendent Dr. Deborah Gonzalez explained that a serious budget deficit has forced the district to make tough decisions.

“We want to ensure that the next 153 years are focused on serving children rather than worrying about finances,” Gonzalez said.

Despite concerns, Dunbar Principal Nadine Gofonia believes the consolidation could help the district stabilize and improve education quality.

“We are dedicated to taking care of the people in the schools as well as the families and the kids,” Gofonia said. “Combining some of the schools will allow resources to go further, and the vision is to rebuild enrollment and strengthen the district.”

Community Meetings Scheduled to Discuss Closures

The district has scheduled public meetings to gather community input on the potential school closures:

  • Thursday, February 13 at 5:15 p.m. – Heard Elementary (2301 W. Thomas Rd.)
  • Saturday, February 22 at 10:00 a.m. – Capitol Elementary (330 N. 16th Ave.)
  • Tuesday, February 25 at 5:15 p.m. – Dunbar Elementary (707 W. Grant St.)

District officials encourage families to attend and share their concerns as they work toward a final decision.
