Airports are often measured by passenger counts and flight schedules, but their largest impact may be as employment hubs. In the Phoenix area, tens of thousands of workers keep aircraft moving, travelers connected, and businesses supplied, making the airport system one of the region’s most significant economic drivers.
To recognize those contributions, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and the broader Phoenix Airport System will participate in Airport Workers Day on June 25, joining airports across North America in honoring employees who support daily operations. The system includes Phoenix Sky Harbor, Deer Valley Airport, and Goodyear Airport.
The recognition comes as Phoenix Sky Harbor continues to play an outsized role in the local economy. Airport officials say more than 47,000 people work across the system, earning over $4.8 billion annually. Sky Harbor alone generates more than $44 billion in economic impact each year and handles roughly 1,300 aircraft movements and more than 140,000 passengers on a typical day.
Rather than focusing solely on pilots and airline staff, the observance highlights the wide range of roles required to run a modern airport—from maintenance crews and airfield safety specialists to customer service representatives and accessibility assistants. Throughout the week, Sky Harbor plans to feature employee profiles and host appreciation events, while also encouraging travelers to recognize workers who deliver exceptional service. The effort reflects a broader industry push to draw attention to the often unseen workforce that keeps air travel functioning smoothly.
