Phoenix residents will face additional fireworks restrictions beginning June 20 as city officials implement newly approved regulations tied to heightened wildfire concerns.
The enhanced restrictions are part of recent changes to the city’s fireworks code and are being activated in conjunction with existing Stage 1 fire restrictions currently in effect across Arizona. Officials say the measures are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused fires during a period of extreme heat and dry conditions.
Under the updated rules, consumer fireworks are prohibited within one mile of mountain preserves, desert parks, regional parks, conservation areas, national forests and designated wilderness areas throughout Phoenix.
The restrictions stem from a broader ordinance adopted by the Phoenix City Council that gives the city authority to impose additional fireworks limitations whenever Stage 1 or higher fire conditions are declared.
City leaders say the policy is designed to protect neighborhoods, public lands and open-space areas that become increasingly vulnerable to wildfire during the summer months. Fire officials have repeatedly warned that even legal consumer fireworks can ignite fast-moving fires when vegetation is dry and temperatures are high.
The new restrictions arrive ahead of the Independence Day holiday period, when fireworks use traditionally increases across the Valley.
Residents are encouraged to verify whether their homes or planned celebration locations fall within restricted zones before using any consumer fireworks. City officials have made online resources available to help residents determine which rules apply to specific addresses.
The restrictions will remain tied to fire conditions and are intended to supplement existing fireworks regulations already in place throughout Phoenix. Officials say the goal is to reduce preventable fires while encouraging residents to attend professionally organized fireworks displays instead of using consumer fireworks in high-risk areas.
