Peoria To Host Martin Luther King Jr. Event

The city of Peoria has announced plans to host a free event celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the community center next week.

The event is scheduled for January 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peoria Community Center located at 8335 West Jefferson Street.

The celebration titled a “Day of Service,” is in honor for the minister and civil rights activist who was known as the leader of the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.

The event is scheduled to include activities and entertainment, local food trucks, free books, health and wellness vendors and opportunities for residents to work on service projects.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on the third Monday every January. The holiday was first celebrated in 1986 after it was signed into law by President Reagan in 1983. The state of Arizona officially adopted the holiday in 1992.
