Peoria residents who miss their scheduled trash or recycling collection day will soon face a new fee if they request a return pickup.
The Peoria City Council approved a $50 “go-back” charge during its annual fee review process, with the policy set to take effect on July 2. City officials said the fee is intended to help recover costs associated with additional collection trips requested by residents who fail to place their containers curbside on the correct day.
According to the city, sanitation crews receive roughly 1,500 requests each year from residents asking for trash or recycling to be collected after the regularly scheduled pickup has already occurred.
Officials estimate the new charge will generate about $80,000 annually. Combined with two other fees approved by the council, the measures are expected to bring in approximately $90,000 in additional revenue for the city.
City leaders emphasized that the standard trash and recycling collection schedule will remain unchanged. Residents who place their bins out on time will not be affected by the new policy.
The fee is part of Peoria’s broader effort to manage service costs and reduce the burden created by unscheduled return trips for waste collection crews.
