Peoria Police Fatally Shoot Suspect After Alleged Attempt to Kidnap Woman and Child

43-year-old man with known mental health issues killed after confronting officers in West Valley neighborhood

PHOENIX — A man accused of attempting to kidnap a woman and her child was shot and killed by police in a Peoria neighborhood Thursday evening, authorities said.

The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Matthew Paul Cardon of Peoria, allegedly grabbed a woman from behind as she was pushing a stroller near 87th Lane and Pershing Avenue around 6:45 p.m., according to the Peoria Police Department. Cardon did not know the woman, and investigators said he had a history of mental health issues.

Witnesses told police Cardon attempted to take the child from the stroller. The woman immediately FaceTimed her husband, who—along with a neighbor—chased the suspect into a nearby cul-de-sac.

Officers responded quickly to the scene, where they confronted Cardon. According to Peoria Police Sgt. Araceli Montes, an altercation occurred, leading to an officer-involved shooting.

Cardon was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The officer involved was also transported to a hospital as a precaution.

The Glendale Police Department, part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team, is handling the investigation. Additional details will be released as they become available.
