PHOENIX — A Peoria man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his 2-year-old stepchild, Peoria Police announced. Hein Lwin, 26, initially reported the child was choking on a cloth when officers responded to the area near 108th and Olive avenues on Oct. 24.
Emergency personnel performed life-saving measures before the child was transported to a hospital. However, further investigation led authorities to suspect Lwin had abused the child on multiple occasions, causing significant injuries. Following the child’s death three days later, charges against Lwin were elevated to include first-degree murder.
Lwin was originally charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and child abuse. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
