The Tempe Police Department has concluded a highly effective campaign titled “Operation Street Sweep,” aimed at curbing illegal street racing and enhancing public safety. Running from June 14, 2024, to July 14, 2024, this operation focused on intensive education and enforcement against street racing, addressing one of the top concerns of Tempe residents.
Chief Kenneth McCoy emphasized the department’s commitment to tackling the dangers associated with street racing. “We will take proactive measures, collaborate with local agencies, and employ innovative strategies to effectively combat this dangerous activity,” said McCoy.
During the operation, Tempe police, in collaboration with several other Valley law enforcement agencies, conducted enforcement activities from Wednesday to Saturday, between 5 PM and 3 AM. This focused effort resulted in several significant achievements:
- Zero serious injury collisions or fatalities during the operation period.
- Over 150 arrests related to illegal street racing.
- More than 60 felony charges were filed.
- 11 firearms impounded.
- Over 100 vehicles towed.
The strategic timing and collaborative approach were key to the operation’s success. By concentrating efforts during peak hours, the department maximized its impact on reducing illegal racing activities and ensuring safer streets.
Chief McCoy also highlighted the importance of community safety and the ongoing efforts to address street racing concerns. “As the Tempe Police Chief, I am committed to addressing the issue of street racing and its associated crimes. We will continue to prioritize illegal street racing enforcement.”
