Mesa fire crews responded to a blaze Sunday evening at the Citadel Retirement Community, where one person was injured before firefighters contained the flames to a single apartment.
Authorities said the fire broke out around Higley and Broadway roads, prompting multiple emergency units to rush to the scene. When crews arrived, they found smoke billowing from a second-floor apartment within the complex.
Firefighters acted quickly, bringing the fire under control before it could spread to neighboring units. One resident was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, though officials have not released details on the severity of their injuries.
Investigators are still working to determine what sparked the blaze. Mesa Fire and Medical Department officials praised the swift response of firefighters, noting that their actions likely prevented further damage and potential injuries.
Updates on the investigation and recovery efforts will be shared through the Mesa Fire and Medical Department as more information becomes available.
