One Dead, Four Injured After Pickup Collides with Light Rail Train in Central Phoenix

Early morning crash at Central Avenue and Indian School Road halts Valley Metro service and leaves one man dead, four hospitalized.

A deadly collision between a pickup truck and a light rail train disrupted morning traffic and transit service in central Phoenix on Tuesday.

Authorities said the crash occurred just after 5 a.m. at the busy intersection of Central Avenue and Indian School Road, when a pickup truck collided with a southbound Valley Metro light rail train.

Phoenix police identified the driver killed in the crash as 28-year-old Mario Dircio-Castrejon. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews treated seven people in total, with three passengers and the train operator taken to the hospital as a precaution, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

A preliminary investigation suggests Dircio-Castrejon was traveling east on Indian School Road and ran a red light, striking the train as it crossed the intersection. The cause remains under investigation, and officials have not said whether impairment or speed played a role.

The crash forced authorities to close the intersection in all directions for several hours. Valley Metro temporarily suspended service along the B Line between Camelback Road and Thomas Road, deploying shuttle buses to assist stranded commuters.

By late afternoon, crews were still working to clear debris and assess track damage. Officials urged drivers and light rail riders to expect continued delays while the investigation continues.
