Numotion Agrees to Pay $13.5 Million to Settle Alleged False Claims for Custom Wheelchairs

Settlement Resolves Allegations of False Claims Submitted to Medicare and Other Federal Health Programs

Phoenix, AZ – United Seating and Mobility, LLC, doing business as Numotion, has agreed to pay $13.5 million to resolve allegations that the company violated the federal False Claims Act. The allegations involved submitting false claims to Medicare and other federal health care programs for custom wheelchairs and wheelchair parts.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona, the claims were allegedly based on patient evaluations that were improperly authored, completed, or signed by Numotion employees rather than by qualified medical professionals. This conduct allegedly resulted in false claims being submitted to federal health care programs.

The settlement resolves three whistleblower lawsuits filed in the United States District Court for the District of Arizona. Numotion voluntarily reported several overpayments to the United States and cooperated with the investigation, which was conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG).

The settlement is not an admission of liability by Numotion, nor a concession by the United States that its claims were unfounded. The case was handled by the Affirmative Civil Enforcement Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona and the Department of Justice’s Civil Division.
