A man is dead after a security guard shot him during an encounter at a north Phoenix business, with police saying the man had pulled out a gun before the shooting.
Phoenix police responded around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday to multiple reports of gunfire near Peoria Avenue and Interstate 17. Officers found a 44-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound and took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police detained a contracted, uniformed security guard at the scene and interviewed him as detectives investigated what happened. Investigators determined that the man had pulled out a gun while interacting with the guard, who then fired at him.
The security guard was released after being interviewed, and police have not announced any charges against him. Authorities also have not released the identity of the man who died.
The investigation remains active as detectives work to establish the full circumstances of the encounter and determine whether any additional action is necessary.
