Nikola to Lay Off 855 Arizona Workers Amid Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Filing

Electric truck maker slashes nearly entire Arizona workforce at Phoenix HQ and Coolidge plant as part of restructuring plan

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Struggling electric truck manufacturer Nikola Corp. will cut 855 jobs across its Phoenix headquarters and Coolidge manufacturing facility following its recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

The company filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice with the state of Arizona on February 19, outlining plans to:

  • Lay off 540 employees at its Phoenix headquarters located at 4141 E. Broadway Road
  • Cut 315 jobs at its Coolidge manufacturing facility at 680 E. Houser Road

The job cuts represent nearly the entire Arizona workforce for Nikola as the company moves to restructure under bankruptcy protection.

Bankruptcy Filing and Restructuring Efforts

The layoffs come just one day after Nikola filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on February 18. As part of its restructuring process, the company is seeking court approval to sell some or all of its assets.

Arizona law requires companies with 100 or more employees to submit a WARN notice ahead of significant layoffs or facility closures.

Financial Struggles and Industry Headwinds

Once viewed as a rising star in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Nikola has faced a string of financial setbacks, legal challenges, and operational hurdles in recent years. The bankruptcy filing marks a major shift in the company’s trajectory, as it looks to salvage operations and potentially attract buyers for its assets.

With these job cuts, Nikola’s presence in Arizona — once a significant hub for its operations — is now in jeopardy.

The company has not provided additional details regarding future plans or whether any operations in Arizona will continue following the asset sales.

This is a developing story.
