New Lane Filtering Law Takes Effect: What Motorcyclists Need to Know

Arizona’s SB 1273 Brings New Guidelines for Safe Lane Filtering

As of August 2023, Arizona’s new lane filtering law, SB 1273, is now in effect. This regulation differs from California’s lane splitting law, focusing specifically on how motorcycles can navigate through traffic.

Lane filtering allows motorcyclists to overtake and pass vehicles that are stopped in the same direction of travel, within the same lane. Here’s what you need to know about this new law:

  • Restricted Streets: Lane filtering is permitted only on streets with two or more lanes traveling in the same direction.
  • Stopped Vehicles Only: Motorcyclists are not allowed to pass moving vehicles. The maneuver can only be executed between lanes of vehicles that are stationary.
  • Speed Limits: The maximum speed for lane filtering is 15 mph. Additionally, this maneuver can only be performed on roads where the speed limit is 45 mph or lower.
  • No Freeways: Lane filtering is not permitted on freeways in Arizona.

Motorcyclists should also be vigilant for potential hazards, such as road debris or vehicles making turns or other movements.

Ride safely and enjoy the benefits of this new regulation.
