New farmers market opens in Tempe

On Saturday, January 21st, the long awaited Singh Meadows in Tempe officially opened to the public as a farmer’s market. Shoppers in the Tempe area will now be able to shop at the market for all of their fresh and gourmet food needs every Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 5pm.

Originally known as the Rio Salado Golf Course, the 72-acre space was forced to close after years of decline in the golfing industry. After the golf course officially closed up shop, the city of Tempe reached out to Ken Singh, who was the current owner of the very popular Singh Farms in Scottsdale at the time. In fact, Singh Farms was such a popular farmers market spot that parking had become an issue, leading Singh to close Singh Farms and relocate all of the attention to the brand new Singh Meadows.

The whole process took three long years but the work done to the golf course was all done with the sole purpose of making Singh Meadows the ultimate toxin-free farmer’s market paradise. According to Singh, “the process to remediate the soil and create the soil food web needed to grow nutrient dense heirloom vegetables took two and a half years. Chemicals were flushed and organics were added.”

In addition to the food being sold from local farms, Singh Meadows will also feature a cafe and fresh juice bar. Here shoppers will be able to stop for a quick salad, pastries, and locally roasted coffee with plans to soon sell fresh pizzas and pastas cooked onsite.

Both Ken Singh and his wife and co-owner Lee Singh hope that Singh meadows will become an outdoors haven for all Singh Meadows customers. “I want this to be, you’re sitting at home one day and think ‘Ah, hell! We’ll go for a walk in nature,’” he says. “‘Let’s go have pasta that we know grew a mile away. Grab a carrot and sit under a tree. I don’t want this to be a hoopla. I want this to be simple.” Make sure to check out Singh Meadows this coming weekend!
