New Amazon Warehouse To Hire More Than 1,500 Employees In Tucson

Amazon’s newest fulfillment center will be built at the Port of Tucson, making it the fifth Arizona location for the online retailor behemoth. Survey for the location started eight months ago and the decision to build in the city’s Ward 4 was influenced by the geography and demographics of the area. Amazon officials eventually decided on the 94-acre stretch, at 6701 S. Kolb Road, which encompasses both county properties and a family owned facility.

The warehouse will be a 60-foot one-story building, with hundreds of tractor-trailer spaces, 64 loading docks, and over 2,000 parking spaces for vehicles, making it the second largest structure of its kind in Tucson. Its day-to-day operations will include customer returns, 3-D printing, and automated pickup kiosks where customers can retrieve packages on their own.

According to Amazon spokeswoman Lauren Lynch the company was drawn to Tucson because of its strong workforce. “We found abundant talent in Tucson,” Lynch said. She went on to comment that salaries will be decided soon, but that Amazon often pays 30% more than other local retailers. Employees will also be eligible for benefits, which include full medical, a 401K, and paid paternal leave.

Business and economic professionals say the fulfillment center will create an enormous economic boost in the Tucson area that will benefit many residents. “This announcement of 1,500 new jobs with Amazon, one of the world’s largest brand names, is huge for Southern Arizona,” said David G. Hutchens, chairman of Sun Corridor Inc., and president and CEO of UNS Energy Corp., Tucson Electric Power, and UniSource Energy Services. “The ripple effect of a project of this magnitude will benefit the region for many years down the road.

Governor Ducey echoed both Lynch and Hutchens’s claims, stating, “Amazon’s selection of Tucson for this impressive new facility demonstrates that Southern Arizona has a lot to offer businesses in terms of talent, location, pro-business environment and quality of life. This project will create thousands of new jobs and generate significant capital investment in the region. We thank Amazon for its continued growth and investment in our state.”
