Natural Life in Prison Sentence for Defendant in February 2021 Shooting

An Arizona man has been sentenced to life in prison for murder.

In August, a Maricopa County jury found defendant J’ssan Carlos Strover, guilty of three counts: first degree murder, a class one dangerous felony, attempted first degree murder, a class two dangerous felony and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a class three dangerous felony.

Last week, a Maricopa County judge sentenced Strover to spend natural life in prison for murder with an additional 21 years for attempted murder to be served in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

The guilty counts stem from a shooting on February 19, 2021 in South Phoenix where the defendant rented a car, bought a gun, wore gloves, masked his face, parked away from where the shooting occurred and fled to another state all in an effort to evade police and prosecution.

“The callous and premeditated acts by this defendant led this office to prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law.  His actions on that night have left a lifetime impact on the victim’s children and family,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell.

The defendant left behind two victims, one fatally wounded and the other will have lifetime repercussions from his injuries. The deceased victim left behind three young children under the age of 10 at the time of the killing.
