Free Events in Phoenix This Weekend

The weekend has finally arrived and with it Metro Phoenix is gearing up for another fun filled weekend full of free events for people in the city to attend. There really is a little bit of something on this list for everyone to enjoy. From art to poetry and even shopping, the city is going to be alive this weekend and you’re invited for free! Read the list below to find out more information on everything happening this weekend.

#1: U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights Book Club

Avid book lovers will be no novice when it comes to book clubs; however, this is a book club that will be sure to surprise every bookworm in the city. At this book club every member will be greeted with a pocket sized copy of the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights available for $5 to ensure that anyone who comes unprepared will be equipped with the proper book for discussion. Aimed at “engaging participants in a deeper understanding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights as living documents,” the group will be meeting this Sunday from 3pm to 5pm at the Newton. Please see the Facebook group here for more information:

#2: “Minds on the Move: The Treadmill Tapes”

For those who love to be active but also can appreciate different forms of art, the ASU Art Museum has just the thing for you. On Saturday from 11am to 5pm, museum visitors will be able to view “Minds on the Move: The Treadmill Tapes” as it is projected in a gallery for all to see. Created by dance legend Liz Lerman, “Minds on the Move: The Treadmill Tapes” are videotaped conversations between Lerman on a pair of treadmills in the ASU Art Museum and various other ASU community members. Make sure to visit the ASU Art Museum’s website for all of the information.

#3: Sweet Salvage: Green Acres

If your favorite weekend activity involves window shopping (and maybe just a little bit of actual shopping) then you will be sure to love this month’s Sweet Salvage vintage pop up. The theme this month is Green Acres and will feature everything from shabby chic farmhouse decorations to Manhattan style home goods. Be sure to not miss out on a very unique shopping experience in the city this week. Hours are Friday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm with all the details located on the Sweet Salvage website.

#4: “Nasty Women: Phoenix Unite”

Ever since Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton a “nasty woman,” the phrase has erupted as a trending hashtag around the world resulting in political art speaking volumes about the feelings many artists have towards the president-elect. This weekend Metro Phoenix will be home to an exhibition of this artwork, with all sales going to help fund Planned Parenthood Arizona. Make sure to show up when the doors open for this event on Friday at 6pm to get in for free; but even if you can’t make it until after 7pm your ticket cost will be sure to go towards a worthy cause: admission is a $2 to $10 donation to Planned Parenthood. Make sure to visit the Facebook event for all of the details:

#5: Cast Your Voice Poetry Workshop

In the theme of speaking up and out, poets have gotten together to host a “Cast Your Voice” workshop and open mic at the Wasted Ink Zine Distro. Attendees are encouraged to make “noise at a time when silence seems placed as the only option.” The workshop will be held from 5pm to 6:30pm, however space is limited so make sure to email [email protected] to reserve your spot. The open mic will begin at 7pm and participants and audience members are free.
