Interstate 10 drivers in the Phoenix area should plan ahead and use alternate routes this weekend (April 22-25) due to freeway closures needed for improvement projects, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The following weekend closures will affect travel to downtown Phoenix, Sky Harbor International Airport and other destinations:
Eastbound I-10 closed between the SR 51/Loop 202 “Mini-Stack” and State Route 143 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (April 25) for Salt River Project utility relocation and other work associated with the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project. All eastbound I-10 on-ramps between Third and 40th streets, including the southbound SR 51 ramps, will be closed. Southbound I-17 on-ramps at Seventh Avenue and Seventh Street closed. Detours: Eastbound I-10 traffic can detour on eastbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to southbound Loop 101 in the Tempe/Chandler areas and use westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) to reach I-10 beyond the closure. Expect heavy traffic. Airport traffic: Consider using eastbound Loop 202 to reach airport exits, including 40th/44th streets or southbound SR 143. The southbound I-17 exit to Sky Harbor Airport (ramp to westbound I-10) will remain open.
Westbound I-10 closed between SR 143 and the I-17 “Split” interchange near Sky Harbor Airport from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday (April 25) for SRP utility relocation and other I-10 improvement work. All westbound I-10 on-ramps between Elliot Road and 32nd Street closed. Both westbound US 60 ramps (including HOV ramp) to westbound I-10 closed. Westbound US 60 on-ramp at Mill Avenue closed. Detours: Consider using eastbound US 60 to northbound Loop 101 and westbound Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to reach Sky Harbor Airport and downtown Phoenix area. Expect heavy traffic. Drivers in the East Valley also can consider using westbound/northbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) to reach I-10 in the West Valley.
Eastbound I-10 closed between Loop 101 and 75th Avenue in the West Valley from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday (April 25) for ongoing pavement improvement project. Southbound Loop 101 (Agua Fria Freeway) ramp to eastbound I-10 closed. Eastbound I-10 on-ramps at Fairway Drive, Avondale Boulevard and 99th Avenue also closed. Detour: Eastbound I-10 drivers should consider exiting ahead of the closure and using local routes, including McDowell or Buckeye roads, to travel beyond the closure. Once beyond the closure, southbound/eastbound Loop 202 (South Mountain Freeway) will provide an alternate route to travel to I-10 near Chandler Boulevard (for travel to the East Valley or toward Tucson). Drivers also should note the closure of eastbound I-10 between SR 51 and SR 143 (listed above).
