The largest locally owned health club chain in the state of Arizona has announced that it will be expanding. Mountainside Fitness is planning to launch two additional centers in the North and South Valley by 2018. “That will put us at 16 locations,” said founder and CEO Tom Hatten. “There may be a few more after that, but at that point, we may just run out of room in the Valley for what we’re comfortable with in terms of demographics.”
Hatten opened his first fitness center back in 1991 when he was just 22 years old. “My goal back in those days was just to have two fitness centers. My first one was so small. The whole club was the size of a basketball court. So, I never thought we would be this big,” Hatten said. “I was ambitious, but I was conservative and I was learning. I was so young at the time – just 22. I didn’t have any partners, so everything was slow.”
Here is a list of all Mountainside’s current locations, along with those opening soon:
- Downtown at Chase Field
- North Phoenix
- North Scottsdale
- Queen Creek
- Scottsdale Pavilions
- Surprise Arizona
- Ahwatukee (opening soon)
- Happy Valley (opening soon)
Although Hatten alluded to the potential of Mountainside expanding outside of Arizona’s borders in the future, he’s also in no hurry to make that move yet. Instead, he wants to focus on his current operations and maintain the “friendliest gyms in town” for his estimated 60,000 active members. The new facilities will also create a significant number of jobs for the respective communities.
