Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates Doesn’t Disappoint

How do you find a date for your little sister’s Hawaiian wedding and impress your family?

Step one: Post an ad on Craigslist. Step two: Go viral. Step three: Find nice girls. Step four: Success.

That was the plan for partying brothers Dave and Mike Stangle — only it didn’t quite work out how they planned.

“Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates,” directed by Jake Szymanski (7 Days in Hell, Funny or Die) is a wild, raunchy comedy based loosely on a true story of two adventurous men trying to find dates that will satisfy their family.

Dave (Zac Efron) and Mike (Adam Devine) are pure rascals, always causing chaos and destruction at family events, though they are oblivious of doing so. After their younger sister Jeanie (Sugar Lyn Beard) announces her Hawaiian wedding plans, she and their parents stage an intervention with the brothers, demanding they find and bring respectable dates to avoid things getting out of control. The brothers, who will do anything for their baby sister, give in.

The two, simply put, are charmingly idiotic. They decide their best bet is to post an ad on Craigslist, offering an all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii for two respectable ladies to accompany them.

The post blows up (imagine that?) and they become the target of thousands of women (and some men) looking for that free, exotic vacation.

Cue Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza), charming best friends who manage to win the hearts of Mike and Dave and snag the two free seats to Hawaii. Everyone is in love with these new, respectable dates, and Jeanie’s wedding is unfolding perfectly.

Until Alice and Tatiana show their wild sides, that is, nearly proving too much for even Mike and Dave.

The main cast is the main appeal for this movie. Efron and Devine are a hilarious and convincingly lovable team, as are Kendrick and Plaza. Kendrick wins over everyone with her sweet and spacey demeanor, and Plaza is wonderfully invasive with her forceful, too-much-for-one-man attitude.

There are more than enough one-liners and banter delivered flawlessly, pleasing the audience and moving it through the wandering plot with relative ease. There’s the expected share of over-the-top, in-your-face sex, drugs and booze jokes, and there’s also a lot of just plain goofiness.

Despite some clichés and missed opportunities, “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” is a fun and laugh-worthy movie. The cast carries the standard R-rated comedy plot in a way that allows the audience to just stop thinking and simply have fun.

If you’re looking for cinema gold, this isn’t the movie for you. If you’re simply looking for a good laugh, however, this is a great opportunity to grab your date and have a fun time.

If you don’t have a date, there’s always Craigslist.
