FLORENCE, Ariz. — A 32-year-old Mexican citizen held in federal immigration custody died after being hospitalized from the Central Arizona Correctional Complex, officials confirmed.
The man, identified as Lorenzo Antonio Batrez Vargas, was pronounced dead at 7:02 a.m. on Aug. 31 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa. Authorities said the preliminary cause of death is not yet known and remains under review.
Background on the detainee’s history
Records show Batrez Vargas had previous arrests in Arizona for DUI-related offenses dating back to 2018. More recently, he was arrested in Flagstaff in August 2025 on a felony drug charge before being transferred into ICE custody and housed at the Florence complex.
Notifications and next steps
In line with federal policy, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Inspector General, and the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility have all been notified. The Mexican Embassy was also informed of his death.
Officials said reports regarding in-custody deaths will be made publicly available within 90 days as required by law.
ICE statement on medical care
ICE emphasized that detainees receive medical, dental, and mental health screenings within hours of arrival at its facilities, followed by full health assessments within two weeks. Officials noted that medical care is available around the clock and that no person in custody is denied emergency treatment.
