Mesa Woman Accused of Shooting Son After Argument Over Video Game Noise

Police say a domestic dispute escalated when the 72-year-old allegedly shot her adult son in the stomach during a confrontation

PHOENIX — A 72-year-old Mesa woman was arrested Saturday evening after allegedly shooting her adult son during a domestic dispute, according to the Mesa Police Department.

Officers responded to a call around 8:50 p.m. near 205 S. Higley Road and found a 38-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was transported to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. Police have not released his name.

The suspect, identified as Hazel Benson, was taken into custody and charged with multiple felonies in connection with the shooting.

According to police, the incident stemmed from an argument about the son playing video games too loudly. After an initial dispute, the son reportedly left the residence to go for a walk. Upon his return, another argument ensued.

Police say Benson blocked the doorway to prevent her son from entering the home. When he allegedly lunged toward her, she fired a gun, striking him in the stomach.

Benson now faces two counts of aggravated assault, one count of disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon, and one count of discharging a firearm within city limits.

The investigation is ongoing.
