In a significant legal development, Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell has announced the indictment of two Mesa teenagers, Daniel Traynor and Eliyzar Frias, on multiple felony charges. The charges stem from a reckless and dangerous act that involved setting off an explosive device at a Mesa residence, causing substantial property damage and injuring the homeowner.
The incident occurred on June 13, when Traynor and Frias approached a home near Guadalupe Road and Arizona Avenue in Mesa. The teenagers placed an explosive device at the front door of the residence. Alerted by the movement detected by his security system, the homeowner moved towards the door just as the device detonated. The powerful explosion shattered several windows, including one directly above the homeowner’s head, leaving him initially convinced he had been shot. The blast resulted in thousands of dollars in property damage.
“Regardless of someone’s age, these destructive and potentially deadly acts will not be tolerated,” stated County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. Her firm stance reflects the gravity of the incident and the potential consequences of such reckless behavior.
Following a thorough investigation, both Traynor and Frias were indicted on June 26 on several serious charges:
- One count of Arson of an Occupied Structure, a Class Two Dangerous Felony
- One count of Aggravated Assault, a Class Three Dangerous Felony
- One count of Depositing Explosives, a Class Four Dangerous Felony
- One count of Criminal Damage, a Class Four Felony
- One count of Disorderly Conduct, a Class Six Dangerous Felony
Both defendants are currently being held on a $100,000 secured appearance bond and remain in custody as they await further legal proceedings. The charges highlight the severity of their actions and the substantial risks they posed to the safety and well-being of the homeowner and the broader community.
The case has garnered significant attention, underlining the importance of security measures and vigilance in residential areas. The swift response by law enforcement and the subsequent legal action demonstrate the community’s resolve to address and deter such dangerous activities.
As the case progresses, it serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of reckless behavior involving explosive devices. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office remains committed to ensuring justice and maintaining public safety.
