On the morning of July 4, 2024, just before 10:30 am, a routine welfare check by Mesa police officers turned into a significant drug bust, leading to the seizure of $1.2 million worth of illicit fentanyl. The incident occurred in the parking lot of 645 W. Rio Salado Parkway, where officers responded to a call about three individuals in a gold Cadillac, with the driver reportedly unconscious and slumped over the wheel.
As officers approached the vehicle, the driver, identified as 26-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez, suddenly opened the door and fled on foot. Two officers gave chase while a third officer stayed behind to secure the vehicle, which was occupied by 38-year-old Julian Reyes and 24-year-old Sunflower Short. Upon closer inspection, the officer noticed small blue pills scattered inside the car, along with a partially opened duffel bag containing several medium-sized packages wrapped in packing tape.
Rodriguez’s attempt to escape was short-lived. He was apprehended and transported to a nearby hospital after injuring his arm on razor wire during his flight. Meanwhile, officers at the scene obtained a search warrant to thoroughly investigate the contents of the Cadillac.
The search revealed a staggering 58 packaged bundles, totaling over 200 pounds, along with two to three smaller opened bundles. The packages contained approximately 750,000 M30 blue pills, identified as illicit fentanyl, with an estimated street value of $1.2 million. This potent opioid, often disguised as prescription medication, is notorious for its role in the escalating opioid crisis, posing significant risks to users and law enforcement alike.
Julian Reyes and Sunflower Short were promptly arrested and booked into jail on charges of Possession of Narcotic Drugs and Drug Paraphernalia. Gabriel Rodriguez, still under medical care, faces serious charges of Possession and Transport of Narcotic Drugs for Sale and Possession of Narcotic Drugs upon his discharge from the hospital.
This incident underscores the persistent threat posed by illicit fentanyl in the community. The Mesa Police Department’s swift action and thorough investigation highlight their commitment to combating drug trafficking and protecting public safety. The significant seizure not only prevents a large quantity of dangerous drugs from reaching the streets but also serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against narcotic distribution networks.
The community remains vigilant, with law enforcement agencies continuing their efforts to dismantle drug operations and safeguard the well-being of residents. The July 4th drug bust is a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration and dedication in the fight against illicit drugs, reinforcing the importance of vigilance and prompt action in the face of emerging threats.
