Mesa police have identified the man believed responsible for a deadly shooting that left one person dead and two others injured in a residential neighborhood Sunday night, as investigators work to determine what led to the violence.
Police said 47-year-old Kevin Richardson fatally shot one person before apparently taking his own life during the incident near Lindsay and Brown roads, close to Mountain View High School. Officers responding to multiple 911 calls about 8 p.m. found four people with gunshot wounds, including Richardson and the unidentified homicide victim.
According to investigators, Richardson was wearing a tactical-style helmet and vest and fired multiple rounds during the incident. Police said he also shot at a Mesa Police Department air unit. A rifle was recovered near Richardson, and preliminary evidence indicates he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
An adult and a minor inside a neighboring home were also struck by gunfire and suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities have not released the identity of the person who was killed or disclosed the nature of that individual’s relationship with Richardson.
Mesa police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including what may have prompted the attack. Officials said no motive has been established, and the investigation remains ongoing.
