Mesa Police Arrest Man Accused of Pointing Gun During Road Rage Confrontation

Investigators say a 22-year-old suspect pulled a handgun with a green laser after cutting off another driver near U.S. 60.

Mesa police arrested a man over the weekend after he allegedly aimed a handgun at another driver during a road rage incident near U.S. 60.

The confrontation happened around 8 p.m. Sunday at Stapley Road and the U.S. 60 off-ramp, according to the Mesa Police Department.

The victim told officers he was cut off by a white BMW while exiting the freeway. At a nearby stoplight, the victim and driver exchanged words before the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun equipped with a green laser and pointed it at him.

Police later identified the driver as 22-year-old Brian Lopez. Using surveillance video from the department’s Real Time Crime Center, investigators tracked the BMW, captured the license plate, and located the car as it re-entered U.S. 60 at Gilbert Road.

Lopez and three passengers were detained without incident. Inside the vehicle, officers recovered the handgun with a green laser sight.

Lopez, who is a convicted felon prohibited from owning firearms, was booked into jail on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of prohibited possession of a firearm.

No injuries were reported, and the case remains under investigation.
