A routine police response to reported threats escalated into a fatal officer-involved shooting Monday night in Mesa. The incident unfolded after officers were called to a neighborhood near Mesa Drive and McKellips Road, where a man was reportedly displaying a gun.
Police said the man had been the subject of similar calls in the past. When officers attempted to make contact, he remained inside his home. The situation continued while officers also dealt with a separate crash involving a police vehicle behind the residence.
The confrontation turned deadly when officers saw the man in a backyard holding a firearm. A Mesa officer fired a duty weapon, striking the man. Officers, including a K-9 team, then moved into the backyard and detained him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not released his name.
The shooting will now undergo an independent investigation by the Gilbert Police Department through the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. As with other police shootings, that review will be central to determining what happened in the moments before the officer fired. The initial police account establishes that a gun was visible, but the investigation will have to establish the full sequence of events.
