Police say gun went off while children tried to disarm their mother at apartment Sunday night

MESA, Ariz. — A Mesa mother was arrested after police say she shot her 16-year-old son in the neck during a domestic incident on Sunday night.

Authorities said 42-year-old Shamonica Cannon entered an apartment near Southern Avenue and Dobson Road holding a firearm. Her 15- and 16-year-old children reportedly attempted to take the gun away from her when it discharged during the struggle, striking the older son.

The teen was transported to a hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and was described as conscious and alert as of Monday morning, according to a statement from the Mesa Police Department.

Cannon was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including aggravated assault, endangerment, disorderly conduct, and discharging a firearm within city limits.

Police have not released further information about what led Cannon to bring the firearm into the apartment. The investigation remains ongoing.
