Mesa Firefighters Save Horse From Canal After Dramatic Water Rescue

Crew and owner work together for nearly an hour to pull exhausted animal to safety

Mesa firefighters carried out a delicate rescue over the weekend after a horse fell into a canal and struggled to stay afloat.

Emergency crews with the Mesa Fire and Medical Department responded Sunday evening when the animal slipped into the water while attempting to cross a metal-grated bridge. Although the rider was able to get clear, the steep canal walls prevented the horse from climbing out on her own.

As responders arrived, the situation grew more urgent. The horse began drifting into deeper water, increasing the risk of drowning. Firefighters quickly set up a lifeline across the canal, coordinating with the owner to stabilize the animal and keep her head above the surface as she tired.

Using the rope system, the team gradually guided the horse toward a shallower section. Additional responders then secured lifting straps around her midsection. After an unsuccessful first attempt, the crew adjusted their approach and successfully pulled the horse onto the bank.

The rescue, which lasted about an hour, left the animal visibly exhausted. Firefighters administered oxygen while she lay on her side recovering. Officials said she suffered cuts during the incident, likely from contact with the metal bridge, but gradually regained enough strength to sit up and eventually stand.

Once safely on her feet, the moment was met with relief and celebration among the responders and the owner, who gathered for photos after the successful outcome.

The incident was one of two animal rescues from canals reported that day, highlighting the challenges such waterways can pose for large animals.
