Mesa Breaks Ground on $12.3 Million Fire Station

Station 224 will expand emergency response coverage in rapidly growing southeast Mesa

MESA, Ariz. — Construction has officially begun on a new $12.3 million fire station in southeast Mesa, a fast-developing part of Arizona’s third-largest city.

City officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday at the site of Mesa Fire Station 224, located at 3441 S. 80th St., just north of Elliot Road. The facility is expected to open in fall 2026.

Features of the new station

When complete, the firehouse will include three drive-thru apparatus bays, dorm rooms, offices, a kitchen, dining space, and dedicated areas for job-related training and conditioning. It will initially house a single four-person crew operating Engine 224, but it is being built with the capacity to expand and support multiple units as needed.

Meeting Mesa’s growing public safety needs

Mesa officials emphasized that the new station is part of a larger effort to ensure emergency services keep pace with the city’s growing population, which now exceeds 500,000 residents.

Earlier this summer, Fire Station 222 opened near Power Road, and work is slated to begin this fall on rebuilding Fire Station 205 at Greenfield Road. In addition, Fire Station 223 near 32nd Street and McDowell Road is expected to break ground this winter.

City leaders said these investments are backed by the Public Safety Bond approved by Mesa voters in 2022. The goal, they added, is to strengthen coverage, reduce response times, and prepare for continued growth in southeast Mesa.
