The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that water can collect in the spare tire wheel well resulting in damage to the fuel pump control unit. In documented cases, this can make the engines stall.

Mercedes will begin notifying owners by letter starting Feb. 21. Mercedes dealers will check vehicles for water intrusion, install a drain plug and replace the fuel pump if necessary.

Mercedes report it has been made aware of 773 U.S. warranty claims, field reports, and service reports due to this problem and is not aware of any crashes or injuries caused by the issue.
