Former Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Josh Mauro died from an acute combination of fentanyl, cocaine and ethanol intoxication, according to records released by the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
The records, published online Friday, stated that Mauro’s death was classified as accidental. He died on April 23 at the age of 35.
Mauro spent eight seasons in the NFL, including six years with the Arizona Cardinals. He also had stints with the New York Giants and the then-Oakland Raiders during his professional career.
The 6-foot-6 defensive lineman enjoyed his most productive season in 2016 while with Arizona, appearing in 15 games and making 13 starts. He finished that season with 32 tackles and became a key contributor along the Cardinals’ defensive front.
Before entering the NFL, Mauro played collegiately at Stanford. He returned to Arizona for his final NFL season in 2021. Across his career, he appeared in 80 games, made 40 starts and recorded five sacks.
Following news of his death last month, the Cardinals released a statement mourning the former player.
“We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Josh Mauro,” the team said on April 28. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who knew him. We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving this loss.”
