MCSO Removes 13 Dogs From West Valley Motorhome Amid Expanding Neglect Probe

Sheriff’s Office says three adult dogs and 10 puppies are now receiving veterinary care as investigators continue search for suspect.

Authorities in the West Valley have taken 13 dogs into protective custody as part of an ongoing animal neglect investigation, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators with the agency’s Animal Crime Unit located a motorhome near Salome Highway and Old U.S. 80 on Tuesday while carrying out a court-authorized search. Inside the vehicle, deputies discovered three adult dogs and 10 puppies. Officials said the animals were removed from the motorhome and transported to a veterinary facility for medical evaluations and immediate treatment.

The woman identified in connection with the case, Gina Steffes, was not present when deputies served the warrant. Law enforcement officials said her current location remains unknown.

Sheriff Jerry Sheridan addressed the situation publicly, emphasizing his administration’s focus on pursuing crimes involving animal mistreatment. He said building a dedicated team to investigate such cases has been a priority and pledged continued enforcement efforts to prevent animals from enduring unsafe or inhumane conditions.

The latest recovery follows earlier enforcement activity in the same part of the West Valley. Deputies previously responded to complaints from neighbors who raised concerns about the welfare of dogs allegedly kept on the property. During that earlier operation, officials reported that several animals had been left either roaming freely or confined in kennels after the motorhome was moved from the site.

Investigators have alleged that the animals were housed in unsanitary surroundings and lacked sufficient food, water and shelter. The inquiry remains active as authorities work to determine the full scope of the case and locate the individual believed to be responsible.

Officials have not yet announced potential charges.
