The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says new body scanning technology helped uncover a concealed firearm on an inmate at the county’s Intake, Transfer and Release (ITR) center in Phoenix over the weekend.
According to MCSO, the gun was spotted by one of the facility’s new X-ray scanners after the inmate had already passed through two manual searches undetected. The incident took place Sunday and was announced Monday by Sheriff Jerry Sheridan.
“The success of the body scanner affirms that the decision to integrate this technology into jail protocols was a wise investment,” Sheridan said. “By detecting the hidden firearm, the scanner not only prevented a security threat but also reinforced our commitment to proactive, innovative solutions in staff and inmate safety.”
Earlier this year, MCSO purchased 10 LineV X-ray body scanners for use across six detention facilities. The ITR center was the first to activate the technology, launching its scanners earlier this week.
Officials said the new system is part of a broader push to modernize jail security and reduce risks for both inmates and staff.
