A Sunday morning emergency in Mesa has drawn the attention of local and federal investigators after a man was critically injured while inside a high-voltage electrical facility. The case highlights the significant dangers associated with utility infrastructure, where even brief contact with energized equipment can result in life-threatening injuries.
According to the Mesa Police Department, officers responded around 5 a.m. near Everton Terrace and Elliot Road after a man called 911 requesting help. When first responders arrived, they found him suffering from severe burns consistent with electrocution. Mesa Fire and Medical personnel transported him to a local hospital, where he remained in critical condition.
Investigators say the man gained access to a Salt River Project electrical substation and appeared to have tampered with equipment before the incident. Authorities noted that he was not employed by SRP. Officials have not released his identity.
The investigation now involves Mesa police, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Once completed, the findings will be forwarded to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether criminal charges are appropriate. The involvement of multiple agencies reflects the seriousness of incidents involving critical infrastructure, particularly when unauthorized access to utility facilities is suspected.
