A late-night incident in Phoenix turned fatal when a man was struck by a vehicle after lying down in an active traffic lane, according to local authorities.
The Phoenix Police Department reported that the victim, identified as 41-year-old Joseph Virgil, was in the roadway near 15th Street and Thomas Road shortly after 10 p.m. Monday when he was hit by an eastbound vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived to find Virgil suffering from critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators say the driver involved did not remain at the scene, leaving before police could make contact. Details about the vehicle or driver have not yet been released.
