PHOENIX, Ariz. — A Maricopa County grand jury has indicted Hunter Strawbridge, 29, on multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder, after a fatal stabbing at a child’s birthday party in Laveen earlier this year.
According to law enforcement, the incident occurred at a family gathering in January when the victim, Jake Carbonell, was hosting the celebration. During the event, Carbonell was informed that Strawbridge had threatened a female relative with a knife. As tensions escalated, Strawbridge was asked to leave.
Once outside the home, a physical altercation ensued, during which Strawbridge stabbed Carbonell in the neck. Two others who attempted to intervene were also stabbed and sustained serious but non-fatal injuries. Carbonell was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
Charges Against Strawbridge
Strawbridge has been indicted on the following charges:
- Second-Degree Murder (Class One Dangerous Felony)
- Two Counts of Aggravated Assault (Class Three Dangerous Felony)
- Disorderly Conduct (Class Six Dangerous Felony)
- Tampering with Physical Evidence (Class Six Felony)
Trial and Bond Conditions
Strawbridge remains in custody on a $1 million cash-only bond. His trial is scheduled for June 2025, though the exact date may be subject to change.
“A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty,” said Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell in a statement.
Authorities continue to investigate the case as the community mourns the loss of Carbonell.
