Man in Critical Condition After North Phoenix Rear-End Collision

Early morning crash flips SUV, requires emergency extrication

PHOENIX — A two-vehicle collision in north Phoenix early Saturday morning left one man in critical condition and required firefighters to extricate both drivers from their vehicles, authorities reported.

The crash occurred around 2:50 a.m. near 47th Avenue and Thunderbird Road, close to ASU’s West Valley campus. According to Phoenix police, a truck traveling westbound struck the rear of an SUV, causing the truck to veer into a traffic pole while the SUV overturned onto an access road.

Phoenix Fire Department crews responded quickly to the scene, successfully removing both drivers from their damaged vehicles. The male driver of the truck sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Saturday evening. The female SUV driver suffered minor injuries and was also taken for medical evaluation.

Police investigators confirmed the truck struck the SUV from behind but have not yet determined the cause of the collision. Detectives are examining all factors, including potential speed, impairment or distracted driving as possible contributors to the crash.

The incident marks another serious collision along this stretch of Thunderbird Road, though authorities have not indicated any immediate plans for roadway modifications. The investigation remains ongoing, and police have not released the identities of either driver involved.
