A man is dead after being run over in a Phoenix apartment complex driveway late Tuesday night in what investigators are treating as a tragic accident rather than a criminal act.
Phoenix police responded to the area of 17th Avenue and Tonto Street just after 11:20 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian involved in a collision. Officers arrived to find a man pinned beneath a vehicle. Phoenix Fire Department crews extracted him from underneath the car, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. After an evaluation, police found no indication of impairment.
Investigators believe the victim had been lying in the driveway of the apartment complex at the time of the collision, wearing dark clothing — a detail that likely played a significant role in why the driver did not see him. The circumstances suggest the collision may have been unavoidable from the driver’s perspective.
The investigation remains open as police work to establish a complete picture of what led the man to be lying in the driveway at that hour of the night.
