Authorities in Mesa are reviewing the events that led to the death of a 52-year-old man following a confrontation with police officers during an attempted arrest over the weekend.
The man, identified as Eric Baker, died after being taken to a hospital Saturday night. Police say the incident began around 8:30 p.m. when officers on patrol spotted Baker riding a bicycle without a required light near Dobson Road and University Drive.
According to investigators, officers attempted to stop Baker, but he continued riding and entered a nearby apartment complex. Two officers pursued him on foot while another moved to intercept from the opposite side. During the pursuit, Baker fell on a concrete walkway, at which point officers tried to detain him.
Police say Baker resisted arrest, pulling away, kicking at officers, and refusing to comply with commands. Officers deployed Tasers multiple times and used physical force in an effort to gain control. A third officer joined the struggle, which authorities say lasted just over a minute and a half before Baker was handcuffed.
Following the arrest, officers placed Baker on his side in what is described as a recovery position and called for medical assistance shortly afterward. While waiting for paramedics, he continued to shout and move erratically, according to police.
When emergency crews arrived, they were initially unable to assess his condition due to his behavior. Baker was then transported to a hospital for evaluation before booking. However, during the trip, he became unresponsive. First responders initiated life-saving measures immediately and continued efforts at the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials said Baker had been arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a police officer and an outstanding felony warrant related to a probation violation.
Mesa police say a full and transparent investigation is underway. The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.
